City-by-city shipping notes

Most cities sit on a river or an interstate. Up the hollows, plan on a meeting spot. Notes on each one:

Charleston

The capital, where I-64, I-77 and I-79 meet along the Kanawha River.

Huntington

Marshall University, on I-64 where West Virginia meets Ohio and Kentucky.

Morgantown

West Virginia University, on I-79 and I-68. Hilly streets and game days make campus pickups slow.

Parkersburg

On the Ohio River at I-77, across from Ohio.

Wheeling

The Northern Panhandle on I-70, squeezed between Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Martinsburg

The Eastern Panhandle on I-81, about 80 miles from Washington, D.C.

Beckley

Southern West Virginia, where I-64 and I-77 run together on the West Virginia Turnpike.

Fairmont

Fairmont State, on I-79 south of Morgantown.

Lewisburg

Greenbrier County on I-64, near The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs.

Fayetteville

The New River Gorge, just off US-19. Bridge Day closes the bridge one Saturday each October.

FAQ

West Virginia Questions

Can a carrier get up the hollow to my house?

Often not. Many West Virginia homes sit up narrow hollow roads, steep gravel drives or switchbacks that a full-size carrier can’t climb. We’ll meet at the nearest main road or a lot in town, and sometimes a smaller truck can get closer. Tell us about your road when you book.

Does Bridge Day affect shipping?

Only near Fayetteville. On Bridge Day, the third Saturday in October, the New River Gorge Bridge closes to traffic and US-19 detours around it. If your pickup or delivery is near the gorge that weekend, we’ll plan around it.

Do you ship cars for WVU and Marshall students?

Yes. Morgantown’s hills and game-day traffic make campus pickups slow, so we usually meet at a lot off I-79 or US-119. Move-in week in August fills up, so book early, and ask about our student discount; proof of enrollment is required.

I just moved to West Virginia. How do I register my car?

Through the West Virginia DMV. Bring your title, proof of West Virginia insurance and your ID, and check the DMV for the deadline. Your car will also need a West Virginia safety inspection, which is required every year.

What does it cost to ship a car to or from West Virginia?

Distance, the vehicle, open or enclosed, and the season. A pickup near I-64 or I-79 is simpler than one up a hollow. Get an exact quote or call (424) 453-1800.

Mountain Roads

Almost nothing in West Virginia is flat. I-64, I-77 and I-79 are easy for carriers, but two-lane mountain roads, switchbacks and hollow roads are not. Most pickups away from the interstates meet at a store lot or a wide spot on a main road. In winter, snow and ice on the ridges can push a pickup back a day, so keep your dates a little loose.

Morgantown and Huntington

Morgantown sits on I-79 and I-68, closer to Pittsburgh than to Charleston, and its hilly streets and game-day crowds slow everything down. Huntington is flatter, on I-64 along the Ohio River. For August move-in or the trip home in May, book early. See student car shipping.
