City-by-city shipping notes

Boston-area pickups take the most planning. Out in Worcester County and the Pioneer Valley, things get simpler. Notes on each place:

Boston

Narrow streets, resident-only parking and few places for a 75-foot truck. Most city pickups meet at a wider road or a lot.

Cambridge and Somerville

Harvard, MIT and Tufts, and triple-decker streets with no room to load. Memorial Drive is closed to trucks.

Brookline and Newton

Leafy suburbs with narrow, hilly streets and strict parking rules.

Quincy

South of Boston on I-93, the South Shore’s biggest city.

Worcester

Central Massachusetts near the Mass Pike, home to Holy Cross, WPI and Clark.

Springfield

Western Massachusetts on I-91 and the Mass Pike, about 25 miles from Hartford.

Lowell

On the Merrimack River near the New Hampshire line, on I-495 and US-3, home to UMass Lowell.

Amherst and Northampton

UMass Amherst and the Five Colleges in the Pioneer Valley, off I-91.

Cape Cod

Over the Sagamore or Bourne Bridge. Summer weekend traffic at the bridges can back up for miles.

New Bedford and Fall River

The South Coast on I-195, near the Rhode Island line.

FAQ

Massachusetts Questions

Why can’t the carrier come to my door in Boston?

Usually because the street can’t take it. Many Boston, Cambridge and Somerville streets are narrow, one-way and lined with resident-only parking, and trucks are banned from Storrow Drive and Memorial Drive. We’ll pick a wider road or a lot close by and set the meeting time with you.

Is September 1 a bad day to ship a car in Boston?

Yes. Most Boston-area leases turn over on September 1, and moving trucks fill the streets in Allston, Brighton, Fenway and Cambridge for days. Pick a date a week before or after if you can.

I just moved to Massachusetts. When do I have to register my car?

Right away. Massachusetts expects new residents to register promptly, and the car needs a state inspection within seven days of registering. Get Massachusetts insurance first: your agent stamps the registration form for the RMV.

When should snowbirds book the run to Florida?

Early. Many New Englanders head south in October and November, and carriers on the I-95 run fill up. A few weeks of notice gives you more choices, and a pickup before the first snow is easier.

What does it cost to ship a car to or from Massachusetts?

Distance, the vehicle, open or enclosed, and the season. City pickups and fall snowbird dates can cost more than a suburban pickup in summer. Get an exact quote or call (424) 453-1800.

Boston Pickups

Boston’s streets were laid out long before car carriers, and the parkways along the Charles have low bridges that trucks hit often enough that locals have a word for it. Carriers stay on I-93, I-90 and the main roads, so most Boston, Cambridge and Somerville pickups meet at a wider street or a lot. Tell us your address when you book, and we’ll suggest a spot and set a time.

Students and September

Greater Boston has more colleges than almost anywhere, and many move in around the end of August, close to the September 1 lease turnover. If you’re shipping a car to school, book early and pick a date a week either side of move-in. Many campuses have little parking, so check the school’s rules before the car arrives. See student car shipping and ask about our student discount.

Cape Cod and the Islands

Every car going to the Cape crosses the Sagamore or the Bourne Bridge, and summer weekends at the bridges can be slow. Weekdays are easier. Cars bound for Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket ride the ferry from Woods Hole or Hyannis, so the carrier delivers on the Cape side, and you take the car across.
