City-by-city shipping notes

Southern Maine is close to Boston. Aroostook County is about 280 miles north of Portland. Notes on the main towns:

Portland

The largest city, on I-295 and the Maine Turnpike. The Old Port’s narrow brick streets aren’t made for a carrier, so we meet nearby.

South Portland and Scarborough

Just south of Portland, near the Maine Mall and the Turnpike exits.

Lewiston and Auburn

Twin cities on the Androscoggin River, off the Turnpike, home to Bates College.

Bangor

The hub for northern and eastern Maine, where I-95 meets I-395.

Augusta

The capital, on I-95 and the Kennebec River.

Brunswick and Bath

Bowdoin College in Brunswick and the Navy shipbuilders at Bath Iron Works, off US-1.

Kittery and York

At the New Hampshire line, home to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Bar Harbor

Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. Summer traffic is heavy and the streets are tight.

Camden and Rockland

The Midcoast on US-1, where many summer homes sit down narrow roads.

Presque Isle and Caribou

Aroostook County, up US-1 past the end of I-95. A long haul north, so we plan ahead.

FAQ

Maine Questions

When should I book shipping from Maine to Florida?

Most Maine snowbirds head south between October and early December and come home between March and May. A few weeks of notice gives you more carriers to choose from, and shipping before the first big snow makes the pickup simpler.

What is mud season, and does it affect my pickup?

In spring, as the frost comes out of the ground, dirt roads turn soft and many towns post weight limits on local roads. A loaded carrier can’t use those roads, so we meet at a paved road or a lot in town. It usually runs from March into May.

Can a carrier reach my camp or summer place?

Usually not all the way. Camp roads are narrow, often unpaved and lined with low branches. We’ll meet you at the end of the road or a lot in town. Tell us about the road when you book.

I just moved to Maine. How do I register my car?

Within 30 days. Start at your town or city office, where you pay the excise tax. Some towns can register the car right there; otherwise you’ll finish at a BMV branch. Maine also requires a yearly safety inspection at a licensed station.

What does it cost to ship a car to or from Maine?

Distance, the vehicle, open or enclosed, and the season. The fall run to Florida is the busiest time of year. Get an exact quote or call (424) 453-1800.

The Snowbird Run From Maine

Portland to Miami is close to 1,600 miles, the longest snowbird run on the East Coast. Most Maine snowbirds ship one car south in the fall, before the first big storm, and bring it home in spring once the roads clear. Book a few weeks ahead for October through early December. See snowbird car shipping for timing tips, and ask about our senior discount when you quote.

Mud Season and Camp Roads

From March into May, as the frost leaves the ground, many Maine towns post weight limits on local roads, and dirt roads can turn to soup. A loaded car carrier can’t use them, so pickups move to the nearest paved road or a lot in town. Lake camps and summer places down long, narrow roads work the same way all year.

Summer on the Coast

From July through Labor Day, US-1 through Wiscasset and Camden and Route 3 into Bar Harbor are slow, and village streets have little room for a 75-foot carrier. If you’re sending a car to a summer home, ship it in early June and bring it back after Labor Day, and plan on meeting the carrier at a lot on US-1.
