City-by-city shipping notes
Most Illinois shipments start in Chicago and the suburbs, but carriers run to every corner of the state. Notes on each city:
Chicago
Where most Illinois cars start or end. Alleys, permit parking and narrow side streets mean many pickups meet on a wider avenue nearby.
Aurora
Illinois’s second-largest city, on I-88 and the Fox River west of Chicago.
Naperville
DuPage County, on I-88 and I-355. Quiet residential streets, so we often meet at a school or shopping lot.
Joliet
Where I-55 crosses I-80 southwest of Chicago, a natural meeting point for carriers heading south or west.
Rockford
Northern Illinois on I-90 and I-39, about 85 miles from Chicago.
Elgin
On I-90 and the Fox River, northwest of Chicago.
Springfield
The capital, on I-55 about 200 miles south of Chicago, on the way to St. Louis.
Peoria
On the Illinois River and I-74, home to Bradley University.
Champaign
The University of Illinois, with Urbana, where I-57, I-72 and I-74 meet. August move-in is the busy week.
Waukegan
Up the lakeshore near Naval Station Great Lakes, off I-94 and US-41.
Illinois Questions
Can a carrier pick up on my street in Chicago?
Sometimes. Many city streets are narrow and lined with parked cars and low trees, and alleys are far too tight for a 75-foot carrier. We often meet on a main avenue or at a big store lot nearby. Trucks aren’t allowed on Lake Shore Drive, so carriers come in on the expressways.
When should I book the snowbird run from Chicago?
As soon as you know your dates. October through December gets busy heading south, and the trip home fills up from March to May. A pickup before the first big snow is easier for everyone.
Does winter slow down shipping in Illinois?
It can. A heavy snow or an ice storm can push a pickup or delivery a day, and Chicago’s winter parking bans make some side streets harder to reach. From December to March, keep your dates a little flexible.
I just moved to Illinois. How long do I have to register my car?
Illinois gives new residents 30 days to title and register through the Secretary of State. Some ZIP codes in the Chicago and Metro East areas also need an emissions test, so check the Secretary of State’s site for your address.
What does it cost to ship a car to or from Illinois?
Distance, the vehicle, open or enclosed, and the season. The fall run to Florida and Arizona can cost more than the same trip in summer. Get an exact quote or call (424) 453-1800.

Chicago Pickups
A full car carrier needs room to stop, load and pull away, and most Chicago side streets don’t have it. Bungalow blocks, two-flats with alley garages and downtown high-rises usually mean meeting at a wider street, a store lot or a spot the carrier can reach from the expressway. Commercial trucks aren’t allowed on Lake Shore Drive, so the carrier will come in on the Kennedy, the Dan Ryan, the Eisenhower or the Edens. Tell us your block when you book, and we’ll plan the meeting spot with the carrier.
The Snowbird Run
Chicago sends a lot of cars south for the winter. Most loads to Florida run I-65 through Indianapolis and Nashville, and most loads to Arizona take I-55 and I-44 to I-40. Book a few weeks ahead for October through December, and again for the trip home in spring. See snowbird car shipping for timing tips.
Downstate Illinois
Springfield, Peoria, Champaign and Bloomington-Normal sit on I-55, I-57 and I-74, wide-open roads that keep pickups simple. In the Metro East across the river from St. Louis, pickups work much like St. Louis pickups, and families at Scott Air Force Base move on orders all year. Ask about our military discount if you serve.
