FAQ

Michigan Questions

How do snowbirds ship a car from Michigan to Florida?

Mostly straight down I-75. Book a few weeks ahead for October to December, and the trip home for March to May. Some couples ship one car and drive the other, so they have both cars all winter.

Can a carrier cross the Mackinac Bridge to the Upper Peninsula?

Yes. Trucks cross the bridge every day, though high winds can slow or stop traffic for a while. The U.P. is a long way from the main routes, so give us extra notice for Marquette, the Soo and points west.

Do Michigan’s spring weight limits affect my shipment?

They can. Each spring, as the frost comes out of the ground, Michigan and many counties lower weight limits on some roads. A loaded carrier may not be allowed on them, so we meet at a nearby road that’s open to trucks.

I just moved to Michigan. When do I need to register my car?

Right away. Michigan expects new residents to title and register immediately at a Secretary of State office. Bring your out-of-state title, proof of Michigan no-fault insurance and your ID.

What does it cost to ship a car to or from Michigan?

Distance, the vehicle, open or enclosed, and the season. The fall run down I-75 is the busiest time. Get an exact quote or call (424) 453-1800.

City-by-city shipping notes

Most Michigan pickups are in the Lower Peninsula, but carriers reach the U.P. too. Notes on each city:

Detroit

The Motor City, where I-75, I-94 and I-96 meet. In older neighborhoods we usually meet on a main road like Woodward or Gratiot.

Dearborn

Ford’s hometown, just west of Detroit on I-94 and the Southfield Freeway.

Troy and Oakland County

Troy, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills and Novi, with long drives and newer subdivisions.

Ann Arbor

The University of Michigan, on I-94 and US-23. Football Saturdays at the Big House close streets for hours.

Lansing and East Lansing

The capital and Michigan State, where I-96 meets I-69 and US-127.

Grand Rapids

West Michigan’s biggest city, on I-96 and US-131. Lake-effect snow hits this side of the state hardest.

Kalamazoo

Western Michigan University, on I-94 between Detroit and Chicago.

Flint

On I-75 and I-69, about 65 miles north of Detroit.

Traverse City

Up north on Grand Traverse Bay, cherry country and summer homes, off US-31.

Marquette

The Upper Peninsula’s largest city, on Lake Superior, about 450 miles from Detroit.

Down I-75 for the Winter

I-75 starts at the Canadian border in Sault Ste. Marie and runs through Detroit, Toledo, Cincinnati and Atlanta before ending in South Florida, which makes it the main road for Michigan snowbirds. Book the trip south a few weeks ahead for October through December, before the lake-effect snow starts, and book the trip home early too. See snowbird car shipping, and ask about our senior discount when you quote.

Detroit and the Suburbs

Detroit’s freeways make it easy for carriers to get close: I-75, I-94, I-96, I-696 and the Lodge reach nearly every neighborhood. Older city streets and suburban cul-de-sacs are tighter, so we often meet on a main road like Woodward, Gratiot or Telegraph. If you’re shipping a classic or a show car, enclosed transport keeps it out of the weather.

Up North and the U.P.

Traverse City, Petoskey and the Upper Peninsula are a long way from the interstates, and winter makes them longer. Carriers plan these trips ahead, so give us extra notice. In spring, seasonal weight limits close some local roads to heavy trucks, and the carrier may meet you on the nearest state highway.
