Every car shipping company says it’s the best. Ads, badges and “top 10” lists don’t tell you much. How a company answers a few direct questions tells you a lot more. Here are five to ask before you book, with the answers to listen for and the ones that should worry you.
1. “Is This a Price or an Estimate?”
Listen for: a price in writing, how long it holds and what would change it.
Worry about: “That’s an estimate. The final price depends on the carrier.” That often means the number is a placeholder.
Our answer: the price we quote is the price you pay. It’s good for 30 days, as long as your vehicle, route and dates stay the same.
2. “What Are Your USDOT and MC Numbers?”
Listen for: both numbers, given right away, that check out on FMCSA’s website under the same company name.
Worry about: hesitation, a number registered to a different name, or no number at all.
Our answer: USDOT 3813762, MC 1377368.
3. “When Will My Car Actually Be Picked Up?”
Listen for: a realistic pickup window, and a straight answer if your date is tight.
Worry about: a firm date that sounds too easy for a long route in a busy season.
Our answer: we tell you up front if your date is tight.
4. “How and When Do I Pay?”
Listen for: a clear answer, in writing, before pickup.
Worry about: vague answers, or a new charge that shows up at delivery. See hostage vehicle scams.
Our answer: your price is agreed in writing before pickup, and you pay any balance as stated in your booking confirmation.
5. “What Happens If Something Goes Wrong?”
Listen for: an inspection report at pickup and delivery, the carrier’s insurance certificate if you ask, and a real person to call.
Worry about: “Nothing ever goes wrong.” Things go wrong in every business. What matters is how they’re handled.
Our answer: call us at (424) 453-1800 and talk to a real person.
What “Top” Should Mean
